The pressure imposed by Troika and national governments on the working population and the unemployed, on pensioners and on young people in Southern Europe is increasing. Resistance however is also on the rise: the largest demonstrations since the end of the dictatorship in 1974 in Portugal, protesters prompted the cancellation of some austerity measures. In Greece and Spain, mobilisation is gaining in momentum. Even in France and Britain, tens of thousands of people took to the streets in protest against the crisis. People are increasingly demonstrating their unwillingness to tolerate the authoritarian behaviour of those in power.
The European Federation of Unions has declared the 14 November a european-wide action day. In Portugal, Spain and Malta, general strikes have been called, and protests and actions organised in Italy, Cyprus and Great Britain.
Protests against the crisis in Germany are long overdue! Greece and Spain are being used as test grounds for neoliberal crisis management policies, which are also intended for implementation in Germany. People are already suffering here under increased poverty and social exclusion, while a wealthy few are amassing more and more wealth. If we do not intervene now, these trends will only get worse. Only by practising solidarity now and joining a common fight with fellow protesters throughout Europe can this be prevented.
With demonstrations on the streets, strikes, and the occupation of companies and institutions, we are actively opposing the plans of those in power to pass the costs of the crisis on to us. With massive, brutal cutbacks by the dominant corporations, banks and their governments , capitalism is revealing its true face – there is no such thing as a socially just or “tame” capitalism. High time therefore that we organise resistance on an international level.
